“I looked at several other vendors but spoke with PowerTech customers that were using the product and after I heard how easy it was to implement and run I decided to go with PowerTech's solution. ”

IT Manager, City of Warren

Network Security
OVERVIEW

One hour's drive from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh, the City of Warren is a significant contributor to the regional manufacturing belt and is easily reached by a variety of rail, highway, and air transportation systems.  As a result, we are able to provide local business and industry with unparalleled access to major metropolitan markets, including overnight ground service to both New York City and Chicago.

CHALLENGE

The City of Warren recognizes the importance of security on their IBM System i, which runs many critical applications for the city departments that they manage, including human resources, employees’ paychecks, and accounts payable.  Not only do they run applications for internal purposes, but over twenty two thousand utility customer’s personal data, including monthly bank draft information is also stored on their system. Additionally, the System i, which is also vital to public safety, hosts the city’s 911 interface to run operations for emergency dispatch 24 x 7.

With 200+ users accessing applications from 19 different locations across the city, there was a looming threat that users could easily access the System i and delete or corrupt sensitive data or accidentally bring the entire system down at any time.  “We needed to get a handle on security for our system, things were happening outside the visual scope that we couldn’t see or track.  It wasn’t necessarily malicious, sometimes employees are just curious and explore to see what a certain command produces” said Salvatore Diliello IT Manager for City of Warren.
SOLUTION

City of Warren chose PowerTech Network Security to lock down their system and only allow access to approved users for their specific job.

  • Network Security: Uses IBM exit point technology to protect System i  data from unwanted network access, securing critical information from theft, loss and fraud.

City of Warren has been running Network Security for nearly four years.  “I looked at several other vendors but spoke with PowerTech customers that were using the product and after I heard how easy it was to implement and run I decided to go with PowerTech’s solution,” said Salvatore.

RESULTS

Key benefits that City of Warren enjoys from the PowerTech solution include:

  • Secure network access.  Network Security locks down access control through Client Access including FTP, ODBC, and Remote Command, and only allows access to approved users for their specific job functions
  • More visibility.  Network Security provides regular weekly reports to Sal’s staff so they can easily monitor who is accessing the system from several locations around the city.
